Tan Dun’s Opera “Tea” will be staged

Tea-- The Heart's Mirror is an opera by the world-famous Chinese composer Tan Dun, the opera is a love story between a princess of the Tang Dynasty and a Japanese monk based on the Chinese tea culture and the Book of Tea written by Lu Yu. But the story goes beyond love, exploring themes such as
death, nature, and spirituality. The opera includes music full of the profoundness and ease of Chinese style and utilizes diversified natural sounds as well as percussion instruments like shuiqin (water-phone), yunluo (cloud gongs), porcelains, pottery drums and even paper and water, which are in
perfect harmony with the Book of Tea and the Zen represented in the opera in terms of form and content.

Tea-- The Heart's Mirror has many versions from different countries, including Japan, France, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Sweden, since its debut in Tokyo in 1992. Many famous opera actors of the world and top opera actors of China, including Liao Changyong, Fu Haijing, Li Xiuying and Mo
Hualun, have played the leading roles in different versions. However, there has never been a Chinese version of the opera so far although it is a collection of Chinese culture and national legacies, which is a blank in its history since its birth 15 years ago. In 2008, at the juncture of the
Olympic Games, when the whole world focus on Beijing, creators of Tea-- The Hearts Mirror will pull out all stops to present a classic work integrating the excellent tradition of Chinese culture and modern originality so as to reproduce the traditional elements in a modern way and carry forward
the Chinese spirit with international styles.

"Tea" will be staged in the opera house of China's National Center for the Performing Arts on July 30 and 31.

Daoyin -An Ancient Way of Preserving Life

Daoyin, or "xingqi," is a kind of callisthenic exercise combining breathing with bodily movements mimicking animals. Dao means to regulate qi, or vital energy, by guiding its flow in the body. Yin means to limber up the body and limbs through physical movements.

"Epigraph on Circulation of Qi," an inscription on a piece of jade of the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), shows that people at that time already knew how to nourish qi and guide its flow in the body. Monographs on daoyin began to appear in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24).

The daoyin diagrams painted on silk, unearthed from Tomb No.3 of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) in Changsha, Hunan Province, are the earliest extant and most complete paintings on ancient callisthenics. The paintings depict in color 44 people of both sexes and different ages doing daoyin
movements of various descriptions.

Hua Tuo, a famous physician of the Period of the Three Kingdoms (220-280), adapted over 140 daoyin routines into five groups of movements mimicking tigers, deer, bears, apes and birds to create a set of exercise called Five Animal Play. By the Song Dynasty (960-1279), daoyjn had developed into
baduanjin (eight-section brocade), which has remained popular to this day. Other exercises like wenbaduan and yijinjing, which appeared in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, are a blend of qigong and massage.

Daoyin exercises have proved very effective in prolonging life. Dougong, a blind musician during the reign of Emperor Wendi of the Western Han Dynasty, kept practicing daoyin until he died at the ripe old age of over 100. Sun Simiao, a noted medical expert of the Tang Dynasty (618- 907), performed
daoyin three times a day and lived to an age of 110. Lu You, a celebrated scholar of the Song Dynasty, was still going strong when he was well over 80. No wonder daoyin was called an art for achieving longevity in ancient times.

Spindle, shuttlecock, hopscotch, jackstone, cockfight, slingshot, and swing are all folk games, and they can also be trendily termed "green games": cost free, maintenance free, pollution free and rubbish free. These Chinese folk sports have a time-honored history. Over the past several decades,
photographers and photography fans have shot a myriad of folk sports pictures which themselves have become non-material cultural heritage.

Rope skipping:Most Chinese people, for a long time, spent their childhoods in poverty. However, happiness was never absent.

"Chinese folk games are born free, unrestrained and independent. Inherently and closely connected with the masses' daily life, Chinese folk games are not confined to any specific forms, sites, number of attendees or organizational patterns. A long history, far-flung territory, and diverse
nationalities contribute to Chinese folk games' abundant varieties and multiple forms. Combining body movement and spiritual entertainment, Chinese folk games truly help people build up a " strong body and healthy mind", without direct pursuit of fame and gain", said Mr Hu Wugong, photographer and
organizer of the exhibition "Chinese Folk Sports".

A Different Flavor of "Peony Pavilion"

She suffers so much in missing him that she is doomed to fall ill and then return to dust. As she lies dying, she instructs her maid Chunxiang to bury her beside the plum tree in the garden of her family and to bury her portrait under a stone from Taihu Lake. Liu Mengmei seems to be directed by
this invisible power and he passes through Lin’an on his way to take an examination. He falls ill in Lin’an and stays in the Plum Blossom Temple that Du Liniang’s father has built beside her grave. Liu finds Du Liniang’s portrait there and he falls in love with her at first sight, even
though what he is looking at is just a portrait. What’s more, he speaks to her portrait every day and Du Liniang is moved by him again.

In his rendezvous with Du’s spirit, the fact that she has died is revealed, and he follows what Du instructs him to do: to unearth her corpse. Upon doing so, Du Liniang is revived by the power of their deep love. Eventually, as we suspect and hope, they are united and get married.

Playwright Tang Xianzu

"Peony Pavilion" is one of Tang xianzu’s most famous works.

Tang Xianzu (1550-1616), was born in Linchuan, Jiangxi Province. He had many courtesy names, such as Yi Reng, Hai Ruo, and Qingyuan Taoist Priest. This great dramatist, who lived during the reign of the Wanli Emperor during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), is often mentioned together with the English
dramatist Shakespeare not only because they coincidently died in the same year, but also because their intelligence and achievements are of the same caliber, just like two unprecedented brilliant stars adding to each other’s splendor in the eastern and western skies of drama.

Chinese Director gets a Bear Hug

A Chinese film about love, responsibility and infidelity won the Silver Bear award for best script at the 58th Berlin Film Festival on Saturday. Based on a true story, In Love We Trust (Zuo You), Wang Xiaoshuai's eighth film, tells the tale of a divorced couple who agree to bear another child in
order to save their dying daughter.

"It may sound like a soap opera but I hope this film goes beyond boundaries," Wang said in an earlier interview with China Daily. "It deals with ordinary, middle class people in a way that could take place in any country."

For Wang, the film marks a change in generational focus from previous films like Beijing Bicycle, which had teenage boys and girls as its protagonists and won the Grand Jury Silver Bear Award at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival.

"It is a shift to middle age," the 41-year-old director said. "I wanted to show people already pressured by parenthood, responsibility and work, and how they cope when faced with a sudden disaster."

The film is set in Beijing, but the images are of a large, faceless contemporary Chinese city, where scores of grey, high-rise apartment blocks form a physical maze as complex and oppressive as the emotional one negotiated by the main characters.

"In China, and especially Beijing, everything is changing fast, growing and developing," Wang said. "Everything that was traditional can now only be found in history books."

Wang added, however, that human beings essentially stay the same. "I hope my film can leave people thinking and looking at their lives," he said.

The original Chinese title of the film is Zuo You or Left Right, a reference to the opposing pull of the characters' conflicting loyalties. Wang said that the international title, In Love We Trust, reflects the film's optimism.

"I hope that when people are confronted with disaster, they will use love and rationality to deal with it," he said.

In Love We Trust made its world premiere in Berlin where last year's top Golden Bear award was won by another Chinese film, Tuya's Marriage. Wang's films have enjoyed substantial success on the international film circuit.

As well as his Silver Bear award for Beijing Bicycle, Wang's Shanghai Dreams, about a family sent from Shanghai to work in the countryside during the 1960s, garnered a Special Jury Prize at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

Constantly on the Move

The Beijing LDTX Modern Dance Company is constantly creating new works and will be showing off two new pieces - See and Whispering Wind - this Saturday, at Haidian Theater.

The performances are part of the Dance Now Beijing Series, which will provide a chance for young choreographers to work on experimental concepts.

See choreographer Liu Bin is known for his musical sensibilities and the freedom of movement of his dancers.

This time he has found inspiration in the shape of the mysterious character "bu" which means divination.

When the lights go up, 12 dancers, in white uniforms, red hats and socks, swing their bodies around like flames.

"There is a place in the mind without the concept of time and space, no stop, no end it is an everlasting road, and I cannot cease or release it, I will simply wallow in it," Liu says.

Yao ethnic minority dancer Liu Yifeng has choreographed Whispering Wind. After graduating from Central University of Nationalities, as a visiting artist, Liu studied modern dance in Japan where he was able to concentrate on Yao indigenous and contemporary dance.

The set of Whispering Wind consists of huge red pieces of cloth, signifying the shifting winds that leave the dancers straddling two worlds.

Liu Yifeng's choreography is full of sleek movement and this is accented by flowing melodies.

With the demise of theYuan Dynasty,Suzhoubecame a gathering place for Chinese intellectuals. These included many well-known painters. According to historical records, some 150 painters, about one-fifth of all theMing Dynastypainters, were in Suzhou, and they formed an influential school of
painting. Historically Suzhou was also known asWumen, and this painting school was named theWumen Painting School. Shen Zhou was its most influential painter; other famous members were Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin and Qiu Ying.

Classical Memories in Modern Greek Art

The Classical Memories in Modern Greek Art exhibition at the Beijing Capital Museum from October 18 to November 16 portrays the classical spirit of ancient Greece by modern Greek artists.

This exhibition, which comprises 63 works of art, aspires to present the reception of the classical spirit of ancient Greece (ideas, themes, figures) by Modern Greek artists, the ways in which they have been inspired by it, as well as the ways in which they represented it in their art during the
20th century.

Encouraged by a return of art towards tradition throughout Europe in the 1930s, Greek artists re-affiliated themselves with their ancestral heritage. However, Greek tradition is not limited to classical antiquity. That is why the return to tradition frequently mingled together many sources,
creating a fascinating hybrid, the catalyst being the formal experience of modern art.

Introduction:

A piece of history; a love story; an elegy to the spirit of a heroic man and the passion of a beautiful woman. The dance drama Farewell My Concubine reenacts a number of historical vignettes from the war between the ancient Chinese states of Chu and Han. Among the scenes staged are the forces of
Chu scuttling their boats and smashing their cooking pots before battle, signifying their determination to achieve victory or die; the famous Hongmen banquet, during which Xiang Yu, the King of Chu, attempts to assassinate Liu Bang, the Prince of Han; the Han forces singing Chu laments in the
night, tricking the Chu soldiers into thinking their army has already been vanquished; and Xiang Yu bidding farewell to his beloved concubine Yu Ji on the eve of battle.

Hi

Once again, I'm looking to get hold a list... this time it's to do with verbs.

Thankfully most verbs in Chinese are transitive. However, since beginning to study the language
I've already grappled with a few verbs that are treated slightly differently such as a) 见面 in
which the object cannot be put after the verb and b) 睡觉 in which the adj or frequency is
expressed by splitting the word (i.e. 离合词??), e.g. 睡一个好觉*

(*actually this splitting of the word also applies to 见面.)

I've also come across the word 离合词 to describe these?????

My questions are:

1. Are Chinese intransitive verbs & 离合词 one in the same thing? If not how do you distinguish
them?
2. Can anyone post a comprehensive list of these types of irregular verbs as its not always clear
when learning a new verb whether it is irregular or not.
3. How do you say transitive / intransitive verb in Chinese?

见面 in chinese is not a single verb but a 短语动词(phrasal verb). 见=see 面=face so
见面 which can be called 动宾短语(verb+object phrase) means to see someone's face, e.g.
我和他见过面 is i've seen his face i.e i've met him. ~过 after a verb means to have done so
we can say 见过面 but cannot say 见面过. 睡觉 is a verb+object phrase too, a/one, of
course, is used before nouns. take a nap in english is similar to 睡一觉(you can NOT say
睡一个觉 but 睡一个好觉.

in modern chinese, we use phrases mostly in stead of verbs such as
睡觉(sleep)、走路(walk)、唱歌(sing)、跳舞(dance) but we treat them as verb. in old
chinese before 1900's we used single word more often i.e. 眠、行、歌、舞 because
two-syllable words sound better, i think. 喝水(drink water)、开车(drive a car)、骑马(ride
a horse) etc. are 动词短语(verbal phrase) which means to do something.

transitive / intransitive verb is 及物/不及物动词 in chinese.

You should note from the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary which words are splittable

eg liuwanr is listed as 遛//弯儿 meaning, you can say 遛个弯儿 or something.

I have asked many Chinese questions about this. I remember asking how to make a split phrase out
of 募捐 because the dictionary suggested this was mu//juan. I totally confused a friend of mine
who insisted you could never split those up, but then I found on the Internet 募一下捐 and he
wasn't too sure after that!!!

I'm sure taking Japanese should be no problem, but I'm the wrong person to ask. Best to probably
ask the Foreign Students Office, or better yet find out from a local student/your teacher who to
get in touch with...

And yes you should apply as a Language Student.

I think you should be aware that you have to work your arse off to keep up with the classes at
BNU. You will have a reading and writing class (learn about 60 words a week), speaking (45 words a
week), listening (25 words), and newspaper reading (30 words). And that's just the words in the
new word lists in the text book. On top of that, you will probably have to look up lots of other
words to understand the texts we study - plus you will have homework to do for reading and writing
class and newspaper reading. I would be surprised if you have much time for Japanese as well. Even
the Koreans in my class aren't really keeping up with it all any more. It's a great place to
improve your reading and writing very quickly!

May I ask you which level you are referring to in your description please?
It looks very serious and demanding, which is what I am expecting.
Concerning the Japanese, I just wanted to see my options, having just regular chat with the mates
are another option as well.

I am in 102 but I think you will find 201 has the same subjects and workload. I would have thought
you would be in one of these two levels if you've reached HSK level 3. I'm sure the workload at
the other levels is heavy too, although the exact subjects they study may be different (100 and
101 don't have newspaper reading, for example).

I'm in 201 now and getting my butt kicked since I skipped 102. I hear they are very similar but
sitting in a 102 class, there's quite a bit difference between the levels of the students.

HAHAHA! I can't be TOO sure... BUT I think I passed the finals and got into 101.
I could be wrong though. I should really get to campus and check. HAHAH!
Next semester is SO going to kick my ass. I'm so excited... I think I might pee my pants.

Yes, but I can't remember the name. Come out of the west gate, and walk south, crossing under the
big rainbow thing and it's on your left. It's one of those cheap and cheerful chain places, but I
think it's got good reports on here. If you come past Jindian Huayuan you've gone too far, or its
closed, or I've imagined it.

hello again everyone, ive started with one of my textbook lessons this week and i was just
wondering if slightly exaggerating the tones when learning is going to help me understand the
difference in tones or harm my progress in the long run?

It's good if you can properly grasp the rule of stressing on words which affects intonations and
tones. Though it must be difficult for a beginner.

jhargett -

As a general rule, what sounds exaggerated in your head sounds about right to the listener. This
is true not just with Chinese tones, but with speech in general I think. When giving a public
discourse in English, I have found this to be true as well. I feel like I am over doing the
emphasis but it sounds right to the audience.

For the students that I have taught Chinese to, I usually tell them to exaggerate the tones and
then it actually sounds right to me. So, I would say exaggerate and then get a Chinese person to
listen to it and see if they say it sounds like you are over doing it.

I suppose when you practice it couldn't do any harm. I agree though, tones are generally stressed
on the parts of the sentence you want to stress.

Yes I think when you are starting out a beginner it is a good idea to really stress the tones.
That way it will start to help you in being able to differentiate them. However, after a while you
would need a good kouyu laoshi to help you pronounce the tones more subtely

To me, it seems like saying the tones more subtly comes naturally with practice. When you start
trying to speed up, it is impossible to speak quickly and still exaggerate the tones. Then also,
you learn which words are necessary to speak with proper tones because the listener doesn’t
understand you when you don’t stress them. Another example is the 3rd tone. It seems like you
don’t really have to learn rules about when to do full 3rd tones or the half 3rd tones (sandhi),
because who wants to say a full 3rd tone in the middle of the sentence and slow the rhythm of the
sentence down. So, the common thread here is, practice! (Like you haven’t heard that before)

Just my thoughts, probably completely wrong

As for " it relies too much on cheap tricks for effect, what with all the incest, death and
madness. " -- Considering it is a play on stage, not TV or film which can use all kinds of
technical means, these tricks are necessary for showing a meaningful story in a couple of hours.

"except that it predates TV soaps by a few decades." -- Yes, there's a saying that "the first one
trying to do somthing creatively is brave, others following him are just normal". I have had the
same feeling when reading some old literature works, I felt "they are quiet ordinary, how can they
become famous great works?!" But considering the time they were born, maybe they're not that
ordinary.

Actually, the father 周朴园 is the lead of this play. Any one is interested in talking more
about him?

If we google with key words like " 雷雨人物分析”or“雷雨人物形象”, will get more
info about it.

Well actually I still don't like the story in that sense whether it's "original" or not....

I found the father to be the saddest character of all. And in many senses the most real. He seemed
to be one who was getting through life, had some mistakes, but never went to an extreme, but
simply just pushed ahead, trying to lead a normal life. But what made him the saddest was that
everything around him just kept falling to pieces and he was effected the most by all the same
things.

1. What does the scene of "taking medicine" mean?

The father forced his wife to take medicine which she was not willing to have. What kind of
personality of both characters were shown from this scene?

Do you only want to go to a university? If you're interested in other alternatives, my friend
studied at Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College last semester. She said it was much better
than the university we're currently studying at, and was very cheap. She can't remember exactly
how much it was but if you're interested check them out.

Hi all,

I'm just a bit confused about when to use 连 and when to use 甚至. I know they both mean
'even', but when to use them? My teacher said 甚至 was more formal than 连 and I also know that
the structure of a '连 sentence' is different to a 甚至 one, namely the use of 都/也 after
the object, eg. 他连英语都/也不懂, whereas with 甚至 it's just 他甚至不懂英语。
Do these sentences have the same meaning? Is one preferred over another? Is one more formal than
the other?

Incidentally, does it matter which of 都 or 也 you use after the object in the 连 sentences?

Also, does 甚至于=甚至?

I am really glad you are interested in Chinese.
The is no big difference between the two using, but the tone of "甚至“ is some kind of
stronger then "连”.
When you say "他甚至不懂英语“，you always have to stress the pronunciation of "甚至”
to express your surprise, or other motions.
When you say "他连英语都不懂“，you just state the truth ,and your the motion is not so
strong.
You can also say "他甚至连英语都不懂” .This sentence's tone is the strongest.
Anyway , the moset important thing for you is to say the sentences fluently, and whatever sentence
you say ,Chinese people can understand your basic ideas.

I think your teacher was right. "甚至" is more formal than "连". In spoken Chinese,
most time, we use "连" rather than "甚至" which is preferred in writing, especially in
formal one. You can use "甚至" both in speaking and writing, but in formal writing,
"连" is used rarely. I think it is because "连" is more emotional or subjective. When
you say "他连英语都/也不懂", the implication is "everyone can, but he can't", and in
some context it means that you look down upon him. Compared with "连", "甚至" is
more objective, it can be used just for emphasis without showing your feeling, but
"连" is usually connected with personal emotion, like surprising or despising.

So, if you just want to express emphasis without showing personal emotion, like in
formal writing, you should pick "甚至"; When you want to express your feeling, like
in chat, "连" is preferred. In speaking, You also can use them at same time like
"他甚至连英语都不懂". Here, "连" is used to show your feeling and "甚至" is used
for emphasis.

As to 甚至于 and 甚至, I think the express same meaning.

I think there is no big difference between 都 and 也 when used after 连. you can say
"他连英语都不懂" or "他连英语也不懂", they express same meaning in most context.

I agree that "你真棒" or "你太厉害了" is appropriate. As for "牛", this is used a lot
here, but I'm not sure about in the south. As for the full version, isn't it "牛屄"? Yes, this
form is quite vulgar so use it with care.

Thanks for all the input. I was looking for something more with the flavor of "you rock" in the
sense that it is somewhat youthful, very slangy, though not profane, and maybe a little fresher
than 棒, and more slangy than 厲害. I had heard that 棒can be construed as profane by some (my
experience is that it was always the older generation). I have never heard 牛 or 帽. Thanks!

AJBryant - If it won't pull things too far off topic, I'd like to hear your comparison of learning
Chinese after have learned Japanese. You already know at least several hundred Chinese characters,
right? One of my best friends here in China is Japanese. He's also a classmate, and I know he
struggles with Chinese.

I've always found Japan really fascinating. I haven't been to Japan yet, and would like to learn
the language some day.

I've found that -- since my focus has generally been in reading -- that when I read (past tense --
I am REALLY rusty) Chinese, I was reading it in a kind of pidgin Chinese/Japanese/English
(depending on in what context I was more familiar with the character). Of course, this wasn't out
loud. This was how I was "hearing" it in my mind.

It played holy hell with trying to read out loud in a classroom situation, but when I was doing a
translation on a test or an assignment, it really posed no problem.

The thing is, I can *say* many things in Chinese that I can no longer read or write -- likewise, I
can "read" many things that I can understand but have no idea how to READ or say out loud.

I feel severely crippled, linguistically speaking. But that is, in fact, simply based on the fact
that when I first started studying Chinese I was so hobbled by my inability to "decide" or focus
on a writing style that I never really adapted to one or the other.

In my personal opinion, I think PRC's sweeping reforms of hanzi were an arrogant and probably
manipulative move.
As a result, I feel that in order to be able to utilize all of the available learning resources
while living outside of a Chinese-speaking country, I have to be comfortable with both writing
systems, so I am learning both. But, I am placing a higher focus on the traditional characters: My
flashcards for individual characters usually have the traditional, simplified and Japanese
versions (with one or two omitted if they are the same), and my word flashcards use only
traditional characters.
That's how I'm going about it.

I studied simplified for a year in my home country, and am now in Taiwan where I'm learning the
traditional forms. This wasn't too hard.

The most annoying thing I find is that through simplification some characters have been merged.
This left me in doubt in the beginning which of the two forms I had to use in what context. e.g
里or 裡.

My point of view is to just focus on what my school/textbook/place of residence is using. If I'll
ever reside in the PRC for a while I'll just practice my simplified again for a few days/weeks and
I'll be fine.

I forgot to mention that for traditional dictionaries the Far East Book Co. makes excellent books.
Also have simplified versions. Taiwan based company, but has US distribution. You can google it
and find the website of the U.S. distributer.

question surprised me,because I believed that all foriegn friends choose the simple.my suggestion
is that you should memorize strokes and radicals first.you see,the traditional characters is the
basic of the simple,and why my govermoent made such a policy?easlier to learn and to
communicate.when I learned my second language,english,I must to memorize 26 initials and was told
"you" but not "thee".

Many people are learning simplified now, because China has become trendy. Lots of people I met in
Beijing were learning Mandarin because they thought it would be useful for business. Not many were
like me, just learning it for fun and because they fancied spending half a year or more in Beijing.

People working in Taiwan can usually get by with English. People who have been there a while know
traditional characters, but learning is slow due to the fact that until recently the schools
wouldn't use pinyin.

People working in HK just use English.

People working in Singapore just use English, and translate into Singlish if necessary ;)

Oh, and before someone else tells you, the phrase "foreign friends" tends to make us foreigners
roll our eyes. We're just foreigners. Same as the people generally living their lives in Beijing
that I saw were "Chinese". They're not Chinese friends, until I've met them and we've become
friends.

What do you mean about learning the strokes? Do you mean how to write each stroke? That's more for

I've been trying to learn radicals as I encounter them in new characters. I've been less concerned
with pronunciation and more concerned with "oh, that's a radical" and the stroke order. Not sure
if this is the "right" thing to do but that's what I've been doing.

A general rule in page layout (more familiar with that than HTML) is your H1 and H2 should have no
larger than a 2 pt. reduction in size and then after that no more than a 1 pt reduction per header
and usually by the time you get to H3 or H4 you are at a 12pt font

so

H1=16pt
h2=14pt
h3=13pt
h4=12pt
etc.

You usually will not get down to that many points and actually after h4 you may not reduce the
font size just change style.

Of course Style changes work great in the h1-h4 as well...

Sorry, I don’t have enough time to explain it very clear today. All I can tell you is that the
calligraphy work in your second picture is really wonderful. It might be written by a calligrapher
during the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, whose name was 董燿 Dong3Yao4,
(as long as it isn’t a copycat.)

I can tell you that in the script, Mr. Dong compared his paintings with another painter in Yuan
Dynasty named Ni, Yu. Mr. Dong thought his taste was close to Mr. Ni. Mr. Dong also felt confident
that f his poems contained the essence of Mr. Tao Yuanming’s. (Mr. Tao Yuanming was also a
famous poet in Jin Dynasty.)

Do you mean if there is any way I can tell when this painting was painted? Sorry, I just can tell
you that Mr. Dong Yao was from 1800 to 1883. I can’t judge that whether it is a fake one by the
photo you offer. Can you tell me where you are, say which city and which country are you in, so
that I can guide you to some other people really in this field to give you more professional help?

Anyway, i will be glad to give out information off course, but i dunno what is it that you need
excatly.

aditthana, dorm in BLCU are expensive, they have just been renovated, the most wanted one is the
one in building 17. as for the Conference Centre, that is the dorm that's actually like Hotel,
seriously expensive, you could actually stay outside of BLCU, apartment cost are varied from 1500
- 3000 for a room

There are several places you could consider, Dong Wang Zhuang, this is a 6 floor building without
elevator, the price varies from 1500-2000 a room, and most oftenly you shared an apartment with
others. if you are willingly to spend more but you prefer to have a more quiet life, you could
stay at Furunjiayuan.

Furunjiayuan is located in front of the East Gate of BLCU, it's like 10 minutes walking (depend
how fast you walk really) It has 6 new buildings with a clean and safe (24 HR Police and guards)
nice environment and it has mini market 24 hour and deliverable, and also others such as laundry
and cafe house. This is the most recomended place I can say for a student to live in. A lot of
foreigner stay in here, mostly those who are new to Beijing. Because a city can be pretty but
cruel too in the same time.

I happen to have a friend subleting their 2 rooms in a 3 bed room apartment in Furunjiayuan. 1 is
master bedroom cost 2500 monthly and the other is a small room which cost you 2000 monthly. the
monthly expense bill will vary from 50-75RMB.

so from now i guess you could do some calculation for the accomodation.

There are more issues i am sure, so do post me with questions, i will be more than happy to answer.

Anyway, let's talk more about where do you people are going to stay once you are arrived?Hotel?

First of all let me congratulate all that have alaready got their permission letters, and my
condolences to those who haven`t.

I have received all needed documents a month ago, this friday I will get my visa.

The only problem now is accomodation! "Privet Merrise i vsem russkogovoryashim" by the way!

I`ve heard that BLCU dorms are really different, some of them are pretty good others look like
communal flats. Woman from the admission office told me I can reserve room by phone. Of course
there will be a certain charge for booking.

Better come earlier and see yourself where you are going to stay for at least 1 semester.

Here are some price I`ve got from ISC.

I`ve got some mails from Beijing Foreign Student Activities Center, you can visit their website
www.iscbj.com. Rooms are pretty good, neat and tidy on the photos. They also do have flats and
host family opportunities. It`s not far from BLCU about 20 minuts afoot. And 7 minutes on bike,
though it depends...

just to give you guys an idea, im going to blcu in feb and just paid for my room in a 3 bedroom
apt. The cost is 2000rmb/month = about $270USD/month, about $1400USD for 5 months. However, we
have to pay for utilities ourselves. It's about a 15 minute walk from blcu.

Nice find! I just downloaded one at random (first in the Basics of Unix course) and it looks like
it would be extremely useful for someone with decent knowledge of Chinese who wants to pick up
ways of talking about a specific field.

That one at least is an online lesson, with a powerpoint presentation taking up most of the screen
and the lecturer in a little video box talking to you and pointing at the relevant bit of the
notes.

Hey team

I know that many of you have taken the HSK Basic and Elem/Inter tests and I would like to ask your
advice (just quickly!)

I will start to study in BNU from next week on the trial degree programe. Before I can progress to
the full degree next year, I need to get a level 3 on HSK and was wondering if you had any insight
on which test would be easier to score a 3?

At present I can speak quite well and my listening is very good. Reading and writing are my weak
points. I can read about 400 characters and write only about 40 (I never have paid any attention
to writing).

I am afraid that if I plan to take Elem/Inter I may not reach the level required for a 3 but the
actual percentage required to get a level 3 on the Basic test is much higher. Do you think it is
best to take Basic and just focus on getting up to the 1000 characters/words in the next 2 months
(test in November)? I guess Elem/Inter could come next year??

Do you have any insight? Anyone been in this predicament?

Go and buy some HSK annals and train, especially the reading section wich is definitely the most
difficult for the beginners (the listening part is quite easy if you practice well - they always
ask the same kind of questions and repeat each sentence once; and the grammar is also not very
complicated). Do not bother on the writting at this point (reading is enough). Concidering what
you tell about you current level, reaching a 3 in November should be possible (especially if you
study here in China)

I did the HSK Intermediate this spring and scored a high 4. The ClavisSinica test tells me that I
know about 1400 characters. I've never done the Basic, but I was planning to at one point and did
a few practice papers. I would consider my reading to be well in advance of my speaking and
listening, but on the test I got about equal results in all sections. Remember that lots of
Japanese and Koreans do this test and so this already puts you at a disadvantage. If your reading
is weak as well your going to really struggle with the Intermediate. Also I found the Intermediate
gap fill section quite challenging. I can write reasonably well in free composition, but often
just don't know which character it is they want me to write in the gaps.

Notice that the Basic has three sections; Listening, Grammar and Reading. Not knowing too many
characters is not going to affect your listening, and I find that you can do a lot of the grammer
by pattern matching, that is even if you don't know any of the words in the sentence except for
the basic grammar characters, you can work out which one is the verb, which is the noun from the
way they arrange the four possible answers. So you should be able to get 3's on Listening and
Grammar and then be okay just getting a 2 on Reading.

On the other hand not knowing characters is likely to have a serious impact nearly all the
sections of the Intermediate test. You have to write characters and choose characters for the
cloze test, and not knowing words in the grammar section is really going to stuff you up. Even on
the listening I lost some marks because I didn't understand a couple of characters in the answers.

Note that the Intermediate test has changed this year. I did the old one, which they are scrapping
next year. If you wait till next year you'll have to do more writing and a speaking section.
(Which would be bad for me, but maybe good for you.)

By next year, do you mean the next academic year (i.e. September) or the actual next year
(January)?

If it's January, then your going to have to cram as quickly as possible. In this case I'd probably
take the Basic as I doubt their is much chance of getting higher than a 3 in the time available
(the reading is tough) and doing the Intermediate test at this level can be demoralizing when only
scoring around 50%.

If you've got until September, I'd work on your reading for the next few months and then start
trying out the Beginner mock tests in January and seeing how you're doing.

I find that writing the characters helps me to remember, so I wouldn't abandon it completely, but
then everyone has their own methods.

With your previous knowledge, you will definitely be able to do the elem/int test after half a
year in China.

A couple of points:

1. Answering HSK reading comprehension questions without actually being able to read much of the
text is a skill: you should practise reading a lot, in addition to learning words and characters.
Reading a lot will help you remember the characters you have already learnt as well.

2. You can actually get a fairly high score on the HSK without filling particularly many boxes.
You could get a 3 (and probably a 4 too) without filling out a single box. I usually know about 5
of them and guess wildly on another ten (I got a 5 this June). The multiple-choice part of the
zonghe has a lot of grammar-based questions, so you should be able to get quite a few of them
right without having a very extensive vocabulary.

3. Not being intimidated is another skill: since the Elem/Int exam measures all the way from level
3 to 8, there are really easy questions, and there are really, really difficult ones. You must
make sure to get all the easy ones right and not to think too much about the other ones. This is
particularly important in the reading sections, where some texts are quite easy and others seem
impenetrable.

Thanks for the input - I think I have to get the 3 before the end of this academic year
(June/July) - I will check when I start at BNU on Monday.

I'm probably going to try the Basic in November just for the heck of it - it's cheap and it will
either scare me into studying hard or I'll get the 3 early (likely the former!).

What I liked in the basic (基础) is that you can get a pretty good score while still being a
beginner, which make you feel great and gives you confidence . So I would rather recommend you at
that stage to focus on the 基础 rather than the intermediate (初中) eventhough from a
statistical point of view, getting a 3 through the 初中 might be easier than getting a 3 in the
基础 (which basically means that you get more than 90% correct answer in all sections). You can
of course try both.

As it was pointed out by Yingguoguy, mind that next year the tests will change; for sure the
初中 will. Don't know for the 基础

You need a minimum of 210 points to get a 3 (see table 3); table 2 shows that for one section, 90%
of correct answer equals 76 points. So to get 210 points in 3 sections you need an average of 70
points per section which is equivalent to 70/76*90=82% of correct answers

Well, I have now completed my summer in CET Harbin’s program, and I thought I’d take some time
to write out my assessment of the various aspects of the program for anyone who is interested.

Classes: By and large, these were great. CET Harbin requires four classes, your one-on-one,
one-on-two, and two electives. I found three of my four classes to be incredibly helpful and also
enjoyable (the fourth, 口语/”Conversation” was helpful, but not particularly enjoyable). The
one-on-one, which is CET Harbin’s most enticing special point, is a fantastic opportunity, and I
loved my class and got a ton out of it. However, I would suggest taking some care when selecting
your topic, and being very very specific about what kinds of things you want to study. The
two-on-one class focuses pretty much entirely on pronunciation, and is also incredibly useful. I
really have no complaints about CETs classes, except that the textbook we used for my Conversation
class was pretty boring (although the vocab is all useful). No class was bigger than 6 people. A+
to CET Harbin on this one.

Language Pledge: Lots of Chinese programs have a language pledge in place, but from what I’ve
heard, these pledges are often not well respected, especially in places like Beijing, where there
are tons of English speakers. CET Harbin students (at least the ones in my session) were by and
large very serious about the language pledge, and it was very rarely broken. Additionally, Harbin
isn’t easy to get around using English, so the immersion enviornment is almost certainly better
than in Beijing.

Chinese Roommates: Another CET specialty, the Chinese roommates were an integral part of our
experience. As I expounded on earlier on this blog, learning culture is pretty important in
understanding a language, and they were incredibly helpful to that end. They were also, on the
whole, friendly and very willing to help people do the more difficult things (buy and activate a
cell phone, etc.). Moreover, it’s incredibly satisfying when you realize that you’re having
real conversations with Chinese college students, whether they be jokes over beers at Lijiang or
late night discussions of cultural differences. And of course, by the time you leave, you’ll
probably realize you’ve made some good Chinese friends.

Harbin Environment: If you’re not the sort of person who needs a big city like Beijing to have
fun, Harbin is pretty much perfect. The Chinese spoken there is very standard, the only deviation
being a slightly strange pronunciation of the “o” sound in “mo”, “po”, “fo”, etc.
The area around Gongda is full of good restaurants large and small. There are plenty of things to
do at night, bars, KTV, clubs, etc., and also a fair number of touristy sights, including the
famous St. Sophia, Buddhist and Confucian Temples, Zhongyang Dajie, the Songhua River, Taiyang
Island, etc. Some people didn’t like Harbin very much, but personally I loved it, and I plan to
go back.

CET Facilities: The dorm rooms are large, comfortable, and decently equipped. In fact, given that
they provide a TV and every room has a fan, my room was significantly better equipped than any
college dorm room I’ve been in in the States. For classes, CET uses Gongda’s international
student center, which is pretty unremarkable. The classrooms are equipped with air conditioners,
although they don’t always cool rooms very fast.

Weekend Trips: By and large these were good, the highlights being Xianglu Shan and the three-day
weekend trip to Dandong which you’ve already read about. Near the end of the program they got
sort of lame, but that was actually something of a blessing as by that time many of us were
familiar with Harbin and had a good idea of what we wanted to do with our free time on our own.

Overall: CET Harbin is an incredible experience. It’s not for everyone, and if you aren’t
really serious about improving your Chinese or you’re looking for a relaxing touristy summer, I
strongly advise you to stay away, but if you are serious about studying Chinese I think you might
be hard pressed to find a better program for it. In all honesty, my biggest complaint about the
whole thing was that the dialogues in one of my textbooks were a little boring, and I think that
speaks to the quality of the program. The people who work at CET Harbin are very dedicated to
improving your Chinese, and also appear to be constantly reviewing and revising their staff.
Obviously, enrollment in a program like this doesn’t guarantee improvment, but if you invest
yourself in their program and participate, you will see signficant improvements.

Thanks for the detailed review. Was the program only for college students, or were there some
oldies too?

I'd also like to know the answer to this question. I've heard nothing but good things about CET,
and, as I am already in Harbin, I'd like to look more into CET. The little research I've done
suggests, however, that it is only for college students, and I've already graduated.

Actually the cheese/dairy thing is not related to stomach bacteria, but rather because of a lack
of an enzyme (lactase) required to break down lactose, the primary sugar in milk. Most ethnic
Chinese are lactose-intolerant to various degrees (and this applies to those who grew up overseas
too), with symptoms ranging from a bit of stomach gas to more serious effects such as cramps and
diarrhea. The strange exception is yoghurt, and studies have indicated that the bacterial cultures
in yoghurt seem to aid in the digestion of lactose.

In the west you can find lactose-free milk for those that are lactose intolerant, however I have
yet to find this here. The other solution is to take lactase pills (which contain the needed
enzyme), but I have not seen these for sale here either, though I have not specifically looked for
them.

I came across an interesting article discussing the apparent benefits of consuming yoghurt, one of
which is prevention of e.coli infection! I've always known that "good bacteria can fight bad
bacteria", but this is the first time I have seen this discussed in depth:

So perhaps we should "do as the Chinese do", and consume lots of yoghurt while in China!

Regarding diarrhea, I'm afraid that this is normal here, even for the locals. I remember when I
first got here I would have stomach "difficulties" (sometimes diarrhea, but not always) that would
last for several days or even weeks. After 2 years of being here, these seemed to have tapered
off, although I still get the occasional "outbreak".

You just have to be careful about what you eat here. I know some on this board will disagree, but
I personally would avoid eating from outdoor food vendors, especially those selling food that has
been directly exposed to the air/dust. Also go easy on the hot and spicy foods (especially dishes
containing the numbing Sichuan pepper). You even have to be careful when buying groceries at a
supermarket as they are not very strict here regarding produce handling, and I think it was
Heifeng who cautioned against buying frozen foods. If you're living in dusty Beijing, you may want
to consider wearing a mask when you're out as I suspect there may be some nasty germs in the dust.
I don't think there's any problem with drinking the tap water in Beijing, especially if you boil
it; I used to drink it all the time before I started buying spring/mineral water. Actually I think
the tap water here is pretty good, at least it is miles ahead of HK's tap water in terms of taste.

And again, eat lots of yoghurt. For the ladies, there may be other side-benefits too but then we'd
be getting off-topic.

I try to eat yogurt out here quite often (the brands out here are actually not bad...mmmm creamy
full fat), but make sure you check the date on it and make sure it was properly refrigerated.

I think vendor food is an exciting part of China, so we just need to learn to select wisely. this
word of wisdom was going to be a part of a great thread I've had in the back of my head for a
while: "Things I've learned while living in BJ" but never posted...
1) Don't eat tanghulu that is uncovered.
reason, on windy days you can only imagine what nasty dustiness is stuck on it. Once I was riding
my bike behind a tanghulu vendor riding his bike during a nasty windy/sandstormy day and made a
mental note never to buy uncovered tanghulu again. Can you imagine how much street dust must have
been stuck onto that sugar coating.
2) Don't eat malatang next to puddles on the road~ same idea actually...malatang just seems
unsanitary anyway, but factor in some puddles and cars running through them...ughh scary.

No, it was technically a huazhuanr (sometimes after they weigh it the label says
mantou...sometimes huazhuanr and its white and purple speckled.) Its really big, about the size of
a softball and really good, and thats apparently why I wolfed it down!

haha, I've noticed people vomit ALOT in china...not just from drinking...or maybe that's just
because one of my bus stops is next to a hospital...and the ladies throwing up are all
pregnant...i dunno...or I'm just unlucky and end up witnessing alot of vomit and vomiting in
general, so there are definitely locals getting "outbreaks" one way or the other out here too.

Yes, exactly. I think most of us probably come from places that are not as windy and dusty as
here, and may not realize how dirty street food can be. Oh how I miss those days of grabbing a
hotdog or a sausage-in-a-bun after a night of drinking.

I've had yoghurt that I had inadvertantly left out of the fridge at room temperature for over
24hrs. Of course, the container was still sealed but the taste was right and I didn't experience
any problems afterwards.

Also, I recently had a couple of leftover "sticky rice with chicken wrapped in tea leaves" that I
had also left out at room temperature for over 48hrs. I knew I was taking a risk with the chicken
(back home they tell us to put chicken back in the fridge right away), but it was really good and
I was hungry. And again, no issues.

So perhaps that gives some thought to the notion of having to keep food refrigerated at all times.
Or maybe I was just lucky. But I think one should still be more careful with raw meat and frozen
foods. And in case you're wondering, I would never leave food out at home.

I've seen something matching the description in the shops here. I may be wrong but I thought the
purple bits were red beans? Those red beans seem to get into everything, even ice cream. I'm
gradually getting used to that but not quite yet.

Does the OP know not to drink unboiled tap water? I came to China after two years in other Asian
countries, which included almost a year in India, so I had a stomach of steel by the time I
arrived. But, one time some unboiled tap water got mixed into my boiled drinking water (long
story) and I wound up with diarrhea, a fever, hot and cold flashes, and a general terrible
feeling. I eventually went and got antibiotics, and that cleared it up.

As far as I understand, most yogurt in China doesn't contain the active cultures that have the
health benefits discussed. The only one that does is the Japanese brand . . . damn, what's the
name. . . it's Yakult I think. If you want to eat yogurt to aid digestion you'll have to find that
brand.

JimmySeal, at 1500 chars per month, he has the learning rate at around 50 chars per day with
retention. Does this about equal your mileage on an average day? In other words, vol. 1 can be
swallowed in month 1 and vol. 2 is wiped clean the next month. All 3000 characters done in two
months with retention!

Dunno about the pricing, but as a reference, Remembering the Kanji, vol 1 (which would roughly
correspond to both Hanzi books, costs $32 on Amazon so I'd place the Chinese ones around $24-30
each (just a guess). A little pricey but not prohibitively expensive.

1500 in a month might be a bit ambitious. 2-3 would be more realistic. I finished RTK (2042
characters) in about 3.5 months of moderately dedicated work. I tried to shoot for 40 a day, but
there were days when I took breaks, and other days when I went as high as 60 or 80 characters. I
think 2 months is very doable if you can spare about 1.5-2 hours most days to work on it.

I have not used the Heizig method. I agree with the quote about not trying to learn all aspects of
the characters at once. If I have to choose between two options:

Option #1 - I can pronounce 3000 characters but might not be able to write them and some may not
even know what they mean.

Option #2 - I can write 3000 characters and know at least one meaning for each of them, but can
say very few of them.

I choose option #1. My goal is to be able to communicate in Chinese. In my opinion the most
important aspects of communication are listening and speaking, in that order. If I can read out
loud a string of characters and my ears can't understand what I'm reading then I need to improve
my listening skills, not improve my understanding of characters.

Now there are some people who are content to be able to read Chinese, and maybe don't understand
what is said so much and are shy to speak. If that is your goal then the Heisig method sounds like
a great option.

If you are interested in being able to communicate in Chinese, daily use of a spaced repetition
system is a great assistant in allowing a student to rapidly learn and retain the pronunciation,
and meaning if wanted, of many characters.

This is a big qualification. How much review does one have to do with Heisig system? And by
review, do you mean that you have to review the Heisig book or merely review materials written in
Japanese or Chinese, whichever the case might be?

If the "review" needed is extensive, then I'm not sure you can really say that you actually
learned those 3000 characters in those two or three months.

In any case, I think the Heisig method has merits. It's basically a mnemonic system to associate
the shapes of characters with their meanings. If you don't use the mnemonics created by Heisig and
his co-author, I'm sure many of us have some of our own for the characters we've studied. But I do
find the idea of learning 1500 or 3000 characters before one studies any pronunciation or read any
material in the target language odd. I guess we'll just have to wait for JimmySeal to prove us
skeptics wrong when he starts reading Chinese newspapers in two months (though he does have a head
start by already knowing 2000 Japanese kanjis).

Although the most common pronunciation of 白 in Putonghua is bái, there is a second (literary)
reading, bó. In fact, in classical texts, 白 was sometimes used for 伯, precisely because the
pronunciation was the same. And to compound things, 伯 has a colloquial reading of bǎi. Most
educated Chinese should know that 'bai' is a colloquial pronunciation of 'bo' with respect to the
白 phonetic. To my knowledge, with only a couple of exceptions (read 'mo', which is actually
phonetically very close to 'bo'), all characters with the 白 phonetic are read as 'bai' and/or
'bo' in standard Putonghua. And as soon as you move away from standard Putonghua to local Mandarin
dialects, there is even greater consistency - often there is only one extent pronunciation
(particulary with regard to 白 vs 伯. Same thing in non Mandarin dialects, the pronunciation is
also almost always identical, although sometimes it differs in tone or aspirated/unaspirated
initial.
So contrary to your claim that "a trip around China will show that to be overwhelmingly true", in
actual fact (with this particular example anyway), a trip around China would prove the exact
opposite, whether you're talking about Mandarin or other Sinitic languages.

Yes, I can appreciate what they're trying to say - I just think that it is irresponsible of
academics to make a blatantly false claim in order to market their book to the unknowing. In a

Yes, if someone had to choose between options #1 and #2, #1 might very well be the better choice.
However the goal of Heisig's books are not to reach #2 and stop. It is simply an intermediate goal
on the road to literacy. So why learn the meaning before the pronunciation?
Well, the value of the system is that each character is given a unique spot in your brain, with a
mnemonic story to tie it there. And the markers you are giving it are not just unique, they are
familiar (they're English), not just some arbitrary syllable that holds no meaning to you.
In linking the character to its reading by rote memory, you are forming a hazy connection,
building the character-information relationship on quicksand.
By tying the characters to a unique and familiar word, you are building a strong foundation for
your character knowledge, so that the next step in the process, learning the readings, is
veritably a breeze.

By review, I mean review with flashcards or the like. That is, looking at a keyword, recalling the
mnemonic story, writing the character, and checking the answer.
Upon finishing the book, a learner will be able to immediately put their new knowledge to use, but
the keyword->character connections will weaken and fade over time if they are allowed to, just
like any type of knowledge. Mnemonics help a lot, but they are not infallible.
With spaced repetition, this can be reduced to very little daily review after a few more months of
reviewing.

Heisig does not pretend to enable people to read a newspaper, or anything for that matter, simply
by finishing his books. What the books do is give learners a strong familiarity with 3000
characters, which puts them in a prime position to tackle the rest of the task of becoming
literate.

"payk" in Korean, and "haku," "shiro," etc. in Japanese.
So which of the above is its inherent pronunciation, making the rest of them perversions of this
"pure syllable?"

These 5 strokes have no direct relation to pronunciation at all. The character is based on a
pictographic representation of a bright shining moon, devised to convey the meaning of "white,"
which just happens to be pronounced "bai" in Mandarin. Since all the character intrinsically
conveys is its meaning, "bai," "shiro," "white," and "blanco" are all equally valid names for this
character. The Chinese cannot lay claim to the single "correct" name of a character any more than
the Italians can dictate universal names for the alphabetic letters.

伯 can be said to have a phonetic relation to 白 insofar as it was conceived that way, but that
in no way suggests that 伯 has an "inherent" pronunciation, since 白 itself does not. Even if
the etymology historically states that 伯 is pronounced similarly to 白, that doesn't mean it
absolutely has to be that way. How many characters have deviated significantly from their original
etymologies? So if James Heisig wants to refer to 白 as "white", and 伯 as "chief," he has every
justification in doing so.

With that, I'll leave you with a line from Shakespeare which I think sums up my point quite well.
"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet"

This is true. There seems to be a lot of confusion about this, so let me expand a little.

Normal road to literacy:
1)learn words & their characters
2)read simple literature
3)repeat steps 1 & 2 many times
4)read normal literature

Heisigs road to literacy:
1)learn characters (Heisig)
2)learn words
3)read simple literature
4)repeat steps 2 & 3 many times
5)read normal literature

Notice that the last step is the same. Heisig is just one step on the road. Granted, the road is
different, but it ends in the same place.

Heisig is not a good choice for someone who is having to learn the characters using a different
method; using 2 methods to learn the same character is generally not a good idea. Heisig is not a
good choice for someone who can't do mnemonics, or can't finish the free PDF.

Some people don't like the idea of dropping everything to do an intensive Heisig study. This is
what Heisig recommends, but there are ways around it. I chose to work on it only 2 hrs per day,
and continue with my other studies.

Also, if you don't like Heisig's order of learning characters, and you must learn things in the
order you encounter them, you can always just use his mnemonic technique and ignore the order.

Whichever way you choose, I recommend using an SRS to review. Good luck!

It has a couple of user requested goodies in it so please check it out and provide some feedback.

What's new since 0.7.0 beta 2

* Custom import will now import a better percentage of entries for S P D and T P D patterns.
* Self Review mode improvements. Can now show more than one aspect (character, pinyin,
definition) on a card at a time. Also, users can now score themselves on the test.
* User database can be changed without restarting application.
* Special characters (like spaces, periods, commas, etc) can now be included in pinyin and
character fields.

My problems reagarding handedict and adso plugins with beta2 are gone. Both plugins work just fine
with beta3.

Hi,

My category view stopped working after going from 0.7 beta 2 to 0.7 beta 3. The stack trace is
enclosed.

I used the same user.script file in both 0.7beta2 and in 0.7beta3; beta 2 works fine but beta 3
does not want to open one of my categories.

I am using Ubuntu 07.04 on a AMD64 (2.6.20-16 SMP).

There must be some sort of system configuration weirdness going on regarding those problems you
mentioned. Because I didn't explicitly fix anything regarding them. We'll have to keep an eye on
them.

Must be really strange then, because I had the same behavior on two systems. Anyway, on both
systems zdt is now working nicely.

Did you happen to install beta3 over your beta2 install? I would suggest first trying to install
it to a new directory and see if you have the same problems.

sthubbar, I understand your predicament .
I think time is worth saving, so I'm not against simplification per se, but I don't like the way
characters have been simplified (one can do better : whenever I think about it, 很烦恼). So I
think there is room for improvement (I'm thinking shorthand with phonetic radicals (priority given
to writing instead of reading) and characters with the same "spelling" but not the same meaning
depending on the context - a price to pay I guess - for everyday use).

Hm. Characters got easier for me the more I learned. Not that my retention rate is great if I
don't practice, but I wasn't ever really intimidated by the number of characters (and since I'm
learning simplified its not as terrifying of a task, if I lived in HK or taiwan I'd be scared).
What is hard is sometimes how chinese people break up words and mix them into things that don't
make sense to me. For example, lots of news article headlines, they can be tricky, even if the
article contect isn't so tricky.

I find hanzi intimidating (not so much for Japanese kanji anymore), but I love them. It's hard to
say whether Chinese and Japanese would be better or worse with or without them, but there's no way
around them.

Pronunciation and tone are the most important facets for me, but I still swear by the Heisig
method. It's easy to get distracted by the idea that it "only teaches meaning and writing," but to
think that way is to miss the big picture.
The most important aspect about RTK is that it gives the characters a specific, concrete place in
your brain and strips out everything but what is essential for remembering the character: one
unique keyword, and a mnemonic story to connect the keyword to the character itself. Trying to
learn to recognize the character, learn several meanings, and at least one pronunciation and tone,
all without any mnemonic to tie it to memory, you wind up with too many balls in the air. It's
easy to fall flat on your face.
Once the character is firmly tied to memory, adding additional information (pronunciation, other
meanings) becomes much easier, because you have an identity for the character and are just
learning more about an old friend. And that is the strength of the Heisig system.

Similar characters are probably a problem for everyone, but again, RTK helps here too. Trying to
distinguish 録, 緑 and 縁 simply on rote memory, you can go nuts but if you have three distinct
mnemonic stories tying their component parts to three different keywords, it's near impossible to
confuse them.

It's a shame that Remembering the Hanzi still hasn't been published, but it will be soon, and I
highly recommend giving it a try.

Hey all,

I think to be able to write characters out, over and over for several years, requires a little of
a sado-mascochistic tendency, I have met those people who end class and say things "Oh boy 30 more
characters about old sung dynasty slang to learn I can't wait!. " Yes， they used to scare me too.
I found making flash cards and testing the ones that you don't know over and over helps as you
spend time on the hard words not the easy ones. Also break the charaters in to their radical parts
to help remember them. I found it helps with writing as well as reading.

But the one thing that can keep you going is that written and use of chinese characters separates
the beginners from the intermediates. The intermediates still have to spend long hours studying
characters but they're used to it more and have stopped making excuses and don't procrastinate
anymore about it.
I like to see the high drop out rate. People who come to the unversity and say I am going to only
speak chinese (though there is no requirement to do this) and go to every class every day for the
whole year. Then 3 months later you see them about once a week in class, and the other 6 days in
the bar, explaining the benefits of Bar Chinese and night street food to you.

In your head, you know it was writing the Hanzi for hours every night that drove him to the
bottle. That's when the hours of card making and hanzi writing pay off. You made it to
intermediate student, others didn't. You've put in the time, you've gone distance, you've rocked
the chinese. (there's still lots more Chinese to learn, but when you realize you've made it to
intermediate level, that is a good feeling).

And I don't think learning characters gets easier, you just get better at dealing with it later.

Interesting that there are blogs about "I hate Kanji" (the Japanese version of Hanzi). The
frustration is sometimes for a different reason - inconsistency between reading and writing.
Although the Chinese use more characters, the readings are much more consistent an din 95% or more
- you learn a character, it stays with you!

Someone said - to learn Chinese characters - you have to love them - think about them, write them,
analyse them, compare them. Learning Chinese thoroughly if you do it part-time is sometimes
completely devastating on social life. It's a hard hobby, no doubt.

As a fellow student, I feel sympathy for the thread originator, and so I will phrase this question
in the first person (as I have asked myself more than once):

Why did I set my mind on learning Chinese, if I had first intended to avoid frustration, anger,
feelings of inadequacy, etc.? Obviously we all have our individual reasons to attempt the feat, or
we wouldn't be here (although, I don't know, perhaps not everyone else feels those same feelings I
mentioned!).

But nevertheless, it seems true that there are innumerable (to my small mind) languages and
cultures in the world, most of which languages are more readily apprehended by English speakers
than Chinese. For instance, despite an overwhelming imbalance in the hours of study I have devoted
to learning Chinese, I have grown comparatively much more proficient at reading Spanish simply by
regularly reading a weekly newspaper while eating meals! How embarrassing!

In a way, the lost opportunities for so little progress seem a tragic waste when I contemplate as
a dispassionate observer, but obviously, from back in my own skin, learning characters and tones
still seems worthwhile -- or else it is the feeling I would just waste time in some other worse
way instead...

In a sense I agree that to become an intermediate student/user of Chinese, one needs a strong
command of characters. I mean, if you can't read, then you aren't a good all-around user of
Chinese. But I don't necessarily agree that one needs to have a good command of characters in
order to speak and understand well (and perhaps even to an advanced degree). I just don't think
the relationship is that strong. Cases in point, illiterate people in China, and some ABCs in
America, who can't read but who can easily understand TV dramas, movies and probably even the news.
Conversely, many people develop proficiency in reading and writing but would still struggle in
everyday casual spoken interactions. (That goes not only for Mandarin learners but for English
learners as well; I've met many graduate students from China in the U.S. who can read novels and
newspapers in English, but have trouble understanding even basic English utterances when spoken at
native speed.)
So yes, to be an intermediate or advanced all-around user of Mandarin, it's necessary to know
characters well. But I would not overemphasize their usefulness in helping a person to speak and
understand well.

Another problem with not being able to read is that you'll have trouble using a dictionary,
whereas looking up words in a dictionary is probably the more effective way to learn new
vocabulary for intermediate/advanced learners. You are not be able to find someone to explain
every new vocab to you orally, so not being able to use a dictionary will become a bottleneck to
learning.

Period costume dramas using classical Chinese in dialogs probably will be hard to understand. News
will be hard to understand, too, because of the advanced vocabulary and the bookish
grammar/sentence structure.

Though there is a large gap between written and spoken Chinese, more educated speakers tend to use
more bookish grammatical elements and vocabulary (i.e. those derived from classical Chinese, like
chengyu's) when speaking. An illiterate person will probably find that kind of speech hard to
understand.

I have not had the courage to try the scorpians or silkworms yet, but one of my favourite Beijing
small eats is the rice starch fried in oil, and served in garlic "water". Though I have noticed on
a few occassions that they do not cook it well on the small eats street - it's better to try this
in a 老北京 restaurant.

The silkworms (actually silkworm . . . larva? silkworm babies, anyway ) aren't as yucky as you
might think. All you've got is a shell and then the inside is basically just a paste. Something
with internal structure can be kind of off-putting (ugh, something just burst in my mouth) but
these are just a pale, uniform kind of . . . stuff. If you showed a squeamish alien a plate of
silkworms and a plate of shrimp he'd choose the silkworms - no heads, no legs, no tails. Hell, you
could probably convince him they were a kind of nut.

Now scorpions I haven't tried and aren't likely to - far too much hassle what with heads and legs
and tails to take care of and more importantly you rarely (ever?) see them outside of places like
Wangfujing which makes a point of bizarre food. It's not food, it's showing off.

Actually I think they are pupa. If I remember correctly from grade school science, larva have legs

critters. You are right - a lot of seafood is actually just as gross as bugs, but bugs just really
freak me out.

In Hangzhou I saw a place that kept the scorpians live and you got to choose your meal and they
would fry/roast/whatever them on the spot. It seemed like a circus show.

FEAR FACTOR FOOD REVIEW:

Silkworm pupae were not that great. Kind of mealy inside, like a big bug's belly might taste.

Scorpions had little taste, just real crispy. Maybe like an extra crispy hashbrown or something.
Not bad at all - although there's just not much there. You're paying more for the experience than
an actual meal.

Dog tasted greasy like duck. Not much meat in the dish, either - but mostly bones and fat.

Anyhow, the exotic stuff is more just for novelty. More typical and better-tasting xiao chi
include chicken/beef/lamb-ke-bobs, Beijing pancakes and drinking coconuts with straws. Although
the (chicken?) hearts on a stick were also surprisingly good.

到 means 'to arrive' and a lot of other things, mostly derived from this meaning.
我到北京去 I'm going to Beijing.
這個字好難,我一直學不到 This character is so difficult, I can't get it into my head ('I
study but do not arrive at studying successfully')

In '我告訴到', 到 has nothing to do with 告訴, the transitive verb doesn't form like that.

Yonitabonita, I'm sure the irony of this post has not been lost on you. On the one hand, the
original thread poster criticized a "Caucasian" for speaking to him in English, which I take to be
a criticism of his ethnic attachment to language, yet on the other hand, the poster makes a
sweeping and awkward generalization about all Caucasians.

Besides, this post spawned a number of silly responses, not least of which is that language is
"just a tool." That's actually really surprising to hear coming from people who study language.

I think you're right here, Senzhi. In fact, it could even be said that some English teachers in
China may not even manage to get a job in their home country in the EU/US, so it's not a

I think you've used an awful lot of words to say 'If you want to save money buy cheap things and
take buses'. A list of prices for various products, and comparing expensive / cheap options will
be useful, but the focus on saving is unnecessary I think.

Also tips on running classes with no materials. Finding materials on the internet.

What expectations are for teachers as this is often not told to teachers even when they request
help.
Also the differences in teaching big classes versus small classes.

Buying a new bicycle and getting the joints tightened right away. basic Chinese phrases, turn left
right,stop here. beef, pork, chicken. dumpling
It could be a great resource.

Also talk about cheap things Chinese people do for fun, play cards, chess, go dancing , take a
walk in the park or up the mountain. Go window shopping etc...

I wish I could have had something like that when I started teaching.

simonlaing, I had a book just like that before I came to china. It was called 'Living and working
in China' and was written by a person who came to work as a journalist in Beijing. However, this
book was written in 1996 and so the impression it gave of China is quite different form the modern
country.

I have often asked my Chinese friends, "How would you describe someone who spends too much time
studying; really likes math, science, and computers; would most likely be uncomfortable in a bar;
and likes to watch science fiction TV programs." The usual response is a blank stare.

The only real response I've ever had is "shu dai zi" (bookworm) It's just not the same meaning.

Is education so revered in this society that terms like "Four eyes" just aren't funny because it
would apply to the majority of the students.

Just showed that to my Chinese roomate and he has never seen those two characters used together.
It's not in the Bible either, ie Pleco.

I'm pretty sure showing the work "geek" to 97.2% of American youths will be recognized. The .2%

According to baidu, "Freaks and Geeks" is variously translated as《学校怪人一箩筐
》,《怪胎们》, and 《怪人与小丑》. The focus seems on the "freaks" part of the title.

The closest you're going to come to geeks/nerds in Chinese, at least in standard Mandarin Chinese,
is "书呆子", which is used to refer to someone who's good at school work but hopeless in
anything else, and it's used derisively. It has a more negative connotation than "bookworm."
Notice that its root word is 呆子, which means "fool."

Since there are no Star Trek convention in China and being smart or being good at math and
computers doesn't have the geeky connotation it does in the U.S., I think you'll just going to
have to settle for "书呆子“.

Are the words "nerd" and "geek" widely used in UK, by the way, as they are American inventions?
How about in other European countries?

That's an interesting question. As a social phenomenon, is that kind of extreme fandom associated
with geeks and otaku found in just the US and Japan? That would be a good question for Slashdot.

Geek is used much more than nerd (which is an older term and not much heard (at least by me)
nowadays) but yep they are used in the UK...

I actually have no skills at listening. I'm having so much trouble breaking down a sentence and
translating in an instant. I have to look at the text in order to understand. It's very
frustrating. Should I just listen to more audio? It seems I'm just not picking the words up when I
hear them. When I read them it's ok though.

Yes, it takes a lot of hours of listening actually. I have the same problem, when people start
talking fast. With slower speech it's easier of course, only when I come across a word I don't
know, it stumbles me for a few seconds and I might miss out on the next few words. Just imagine
how many hours it takes children to tune their ears for the mother tongue, that should be more for
adults learning a language, since our ears are already tuned to our primary language. I remember
when learning English I had the same issue as now with Chinese. This problem was a granite wall,
but it went away with time. Just takes some patience and perseverance, nothing unusual about this
problem.

This may not be helpful, but I really don't think there is any substitute for being around real,
live Chinese people on a consistent basis. I study a word in the afternoon, and sometime later
that evening I hear my Chinese wife or one of her friends use it in conversation. That
reinforcement really helps. My listening is quite a bit stronger than my speaking, not that either
one is all that strong (low- to mid-intermediate student). So I would say try to find a group of
Chinese friends, or at least one. OR, get a one-on-one tutor, if you don't already have one.
Recorded exercises, TV programs etc. will never substitute for having to perform on-demand with a
real person.

It's definately important to speak regularly with natives, however what listening to TV and radio
do is improve your reaction and listening speed. With a person, you can always ask them to repeat
what they say, or to slow down, and in that respect it's easier than with TV and radio where you
really have to keep up, otherwise you miss out on what's happening.

Practising with these helps train you to reduce and eliminate the processing that takes place
between hearing the sound and then understanding the meaning. If you're already at the stage where
you know most of the words being presented in an article, and it's just that you can't follow
quickly enough, then radio and TV are a very effective way to give your listening a boost.

But be aware that check-in for a plane 登机 (dēngjī), is different from check-in for a hotel
登记 (dēngjì)

And 退房 doesn't necessarily mean check-out - it can just mean vacate your room (eg to move to
another room). A hotel I was at insisted that if I changed rooms after the designated 退房 time,
I'd have to pay half a day's extra rent, even though I was just moving across the corridor

Greetings!

I was looking for Chinese language schools recently, and I came across a training program at
Beihang University. They offer courses from a few weeks to a full year, with 20 hours of classes a
week. (And can issue student visa paperwork!) Quite a bit cheaper than most other universities
I've seen with similar programs, too. I'm probably going to apply for a full year, starting in the
fall semester (application deadline lasts until the end of June) but first I wanted to know if
anyone here has any experience with this school, good or bad.

Hi everyone,

I’m afraid this is yet another series of questions about studying in Beijing.

I appreciate that us newbies regurgitate the same old questions over and over again, but I really
respect the opinions of everyone who posts on this forum, so I’d really appreciate it if you
could cast your wise eyes over my plans to learn/improve my chinese.

This is the background of me!
I’m 28 years old
I am coming to Beijing between July and December of this year
The sole focus of my trip is to learn Mandarin (I want to have fun obviously, but language
learning is really going to be the focus). This means that I am prepared to have less of a social
life in favour of memorising lists of characters (though I reserve the right to change my mind
about this later on!)
I do speak a little mandarin. I reckon I know about 400 characters. So I basically know what a
radical is but can’t really function in the language to any significant degree. Also, because of
the way I was taught Mandarin, I literally only know words I can write (i.e. I only know about 400
words!)
I am probably more academic than practical in the way I approach language learning. That is to say
that I learn best in a classroom environment. I have utter respect for people who can just rock up
in a foreign country and start absorbing the language but I am not one of them. I have therefore
decided to take language classes for the entire period that I am in Beijing. I am also not put off
by a formal and non-practical teaching environment. I see this will not work for all people but it
should work for me.
I am being sponsored by my employer (I am a lawyer). This may make my financing a little unusual.
I need to show them that I am not living in the lap of luxury in Beijing (i.e. I have sensibly
costed out the trip). However, it is not absolutely essential for me to keep costs as low as
possible. In fact, I would go so far that I (or rather they) would be prepared to pay for
convenience. Thus, though I do not feel any need to go through a company to sort everything out
for me, I would like to have a place on my course booked before I arrive
I do not need to show my employer on my return any kind of certificate in language learning (eg I
got an A in the X university’s diploma course). However I will (rather horrifyingly) have an
exam when I get back to work which will assess my language ability so they know whether they can
trust me with Chinese clients etc). Therefore real progress is more important to me than a
certificate. However, I would like to have some written testament to my ability for my CV (I am in
the early stage of my career and law firms are falling over themselves to sign up Chinese speakers)
I also plan to live with a family. I hope that this will assist in me developing fluency. However,
I am not keen on the idea of total immersion. I have lived abroad before and I DO get lonely if I
can’t talk to people in my own language for an entire 6 months. I have a big gob and like
talking – I feel very down when I can’t chatter away (which, let’s face it, I won’t be
doing in mandarin for a good while). As a result, I am not put off by the idea of being in a
language school with at least some English speakers.

These are my plans!

Stage 1: Academy of Chinese language Study
 I am thinking of spending the first 10 odd weeks (i.e. the bit that is the summer holiday) at
a private language school.
 I have come across ACLS and was impressed by the small class sizes, although I am aware I know
next to nothing about it.
 I feel that the advantage of this at the start is that:

o It should be flexible enough to deal with my level: in all the university based courses I seem
to sit in a large gap between total beginner and 800 characters
o It deals with the problem of me arriving in university holidays: it seems to me that if I learn
at BCLU or UIR during the summer then I will have to do 2 four-week courses. I think I’d prefer
a bit of continuity in my tuition than that
o The dates are quite good for me: I know this sounds like a small thing, but the 10 week course
starts on a better date for me as it starts in the second week of July. All of the university
courses seem to start in the last week of June or the first week of July. I have exams until the
last week of June so I can see this horrible situation developing where I am trying to revise and
move out of my London flat at the same time, then running from my exam hall to Heathrow. Not a
happy start to the trip!

Questions about this leg
 Can anyone offer any explanation as to why it is slightly cheaper to apply through worldlink
education for this course than it is to apply to the ACLS itself? Although I have no particular
need to go through an agency, I am starting to wonder whether it might be necessary as I have not
booked anything/applied for a visa and my passport is currently lost in the ether of the British
Passport office.....
 Do you think the tuition is inferior to a university course?
 Does anyone know whether the accreditation thing actually adds any value/legitimacy to the
program?

 These are the questions I am hoping to level at ACLS:
o Which textbooks do you use?
o How are the classes structured?
o How much homework is required of me?

 Can anyone think of any intelligent questions I should ask?!

Stage 2: BLCU
 I am thinking of spending the last 12 weeks of my time in Beijing (i.e. the bit that is in
term time) at a university.
 I selected BCLU for slightly rubbish reasons: it seems to be reasonably cheap, it has better
dates than UIR, and because my computer is steadfastly refusing to open web pages for Beijing
Normal University
 I feel the advantage of ending up with a university programme are as follows:

o Teaching quality: I do kind of feel that teaching quality is often very dependent on your
individual teacher, which is often more luck than judgement, but I am aware that a university is
likely to have a more transparent system of quality control
o Certificate: I think in terms of wanting some kind of testament of my ability in Chinese, a
certificate from a university might carry more weight.
o Structure: I think that at this stage in the trip I personally would benefit from a structured
environment with tests

Questions about this leg

 The class sizes seem very big to me – how does this operate on a practical level? Do people
think there are advantages or disadvantages to these sizes?

 These are the questions I am hoping to level at BLCU
o Textbook/class structure/homework etc

 Can anyone think of any intelligent questions I should ask?!

None of these plans are set in stone so I would be very keen to hear your honest opinions about
what I’ve planned.

Also, this again sounds like quite a small thing, but does anyone know whether there is air
conditioning in the classrooms of ACLS and/or BLCU? I learnt Mandarin at the wonderful Chinese
University of Hong Kong – BUT my abilities decreased as the temperatures soared. I’m a Brit
– I function best in cold, wet environments. I am seriously worried that I will not be able to
cope in the Beijing summer heat??!!

Accommodation

 I am not sure that really my situation is any different here to anyone else’s – but I
thought I’d just add what I have planned in respect of accommodation just so you have a full
picture of my time planned in Beijing
 I definitely plan to do one of the following things:
a. Get an apartment for the first leg, then live in a homestay for the second half of my trip; or
b. Stay in a homestay for the whole period.

 I think the advantage of option one is that I reckon if I join a homestay now then I won’t
know enough Chinese to hold up my end of a conversation. I think that I would then end up speaking
English, which would establish a pattern for the stay. However, I am optimistically hoping that
after the summer I will be able to say more than “jintian wanshang wo chu tushuguan zuo zuo
ye!” (honestly, they’ll think I’m so dull cos that’s all I can say!). Thus, I reckon there
is less chance of me establishing a pattern of English conversation (assuming, of course, that
they speak English)
 However, I also reckon that if I got an apartment/dorm over the summer I might be too lazy to
move out by the end and therefore never experience a homestay

As I said above, I realise that many of these issues are similar to thinks that have come up in
all the previous posts about study in China, and I do not want to waste your time by making you
all regurgitate them here. However, I would really appreciate any comments on the rationale behind
my personal plans… do you think that it sounds logical? Do you think I’ve made any serious
errors in judgement at any point?

Yes, that's not a very good reason. I would pick BNU over BCLU, as BCLU is full of English
speakers. In the summer months there should be even more, probably lots of teenagers. Give BNU a
call and ask them how you can get an application. They don't respond to emails. There should be at
least one quasi-English speaker in the office.

I would also consider Taipei Language Institute, which is one of the best private language schools
for learning Chinese.

The good thing abt reciting is it can help improve your pronunciation and help memorize and
internalize sentence patterns which are good to have on hand in spoken Chinese (that is unless of
course you are memorizing old poems - no useful sentence patterns there)

The bad thing abt memorizing and reciting is it's BORING. There are enough boring textbooks out
there - no need to memorize the dialogues inside and further bore yourself and others. I think 2
important keys when it comes to content for learning Chinese are 1, Variety 2. Study topics and
learn Chinese vocab for topics that would hold your interest in any language.

I live in the US and very rarely have a chance to practice my spoken Mandarin. As a result, almost
all of my learning is passive: reading and listening. However, I've found that memorizing and
reciting entire pages of text is a good "active learning" method: I've found all sorts of words,
expressions, and constructions popping up in my speech from texts that I memorized. If you only
read a text, you may encounter dozens of new words and expressions, but it is sufficient to
understand them once and move on. However, memorizing, reciting, and writing down a text in a way
forces you to learn those words and use those expressions in your speech. It's useful in learning
to write all sorts of different characters - in my opinion, a quicker and more interesting way to
learn to write a given character than writing it dozens of times on a practice sheet. But more
importantly, it provides you with a basket of expressions and constructions to use in those times
when you wonder "how to say this properly?"

Of course, it's pointless reciting something only once - like memorizing anything else, it's best
to space it out in intervals as has been described in other places on this forum. I'm currently
using this method with "骆驼祥子" and can still recall entire pages that I learned months ago.

As a student my teacher used to have us memorize and perform sections of our text in office hours.
I found it really improved my pronunciation, specially when I memorized it with the audio, and
like Pravit, when I finally got to China and was speaking to people, I found myself throwing out
little phrases from the memorized texts. I think memorizing the texts with things like directional
complements, and other sentence structure things was really good in helping me gain a feel for the
language, and helped me speak without having to think about the phrases.

That said, because as a student I hated memorizing (though I understood and experienced the value
of it), and because I wanted my students to have more communicative command of the language, I
have never asked them to memorize dialogues, though I recommend it to them all the time as ways to
study for both oral tests and the essay portion of the tests. It helps both written and spoken
Chinese in that, as long as you know what you are saying, you have set phrases in your head. If
you can remember a part of what needs to be said/written, the rest tends to come automatically,
and you know what needs to be said/written without thinking. It is the automatic part of the
language that I think is helpful.
However, somewhat hypocritically, but mostly I can't convince myself to be excited about hearing
20 people reciting the same lines over and over again, so I don't require it for my students.

I have a poor memory when it comes to memorizing text verbatim, though I have a good memory for
vocabulary. If I have to memorize verbatim, something that would take me ten minutes might take me
two hours to memorize. I don't think that would be an efficient use of my learning time. For those
who have better memories, it might be ok. I would still encourage people to read more challenging
reading materials instead of memorizing, though.

Sounds it is good way to try. Of course, it depends on person. Well, then what material to recite
might be good. Is there any book just for mandarin learners to recite? If not, then what to recite
maybe good.

The other thing which helped me on my L's learning mandarin is a demo called Fluenz.

They help you remember the tones by testing yourself writing them out. You can easily test
yourself this way and create your own Fluenz way of learning - that's what I'm doing!

Best ever software I've found on the web so far. But out of my budget right now - $299 i think.

I learnt to speak after 2 plays of the demo.

I tried Fluenz too, loved the demo and i have copies of Pimsleur and Rosetta methods. Best
software by far, my copy is on the way.
Specifically to this thread, there is a module on it for each lesson that has you recite/interact
with a conversation that you can play back and compare with the native speaker.

Sudden bout of curiousity: How many of you out there have at some point made a pledge to only
speak in Chinese, even to other foreigners? How successful was it? Did you manage to stick to the
pledge, or was it only when you were being observed? Did you wind up having fewer and less complex
conversations? How did you cope with people who just spoke to you in English? And does posting on
English-language forums constitute a breach?

It's not something I've ever done. However, a couple of obviously foreign girls did stop me once
and ask directions in Chinese for a local cafe. I replied in English, and only later realized I'd
probably caused them to break a language pledge. So if you're out there, sorry, and I hope you
enjoyed your sandwich.

I've done language pledges. They seem to work really well for the most part, although it is really
tough for the beginning students to do it. The more advanced students tend to do a lot of helping
out with vocabulary. I think if people aren't super totalitarian about it, and some Chinglish is
allowed, it can work well, and everyone's language improves. What I found was that even though for
the most part we spoke English once we left the school, the fact that we all engaged in a Chinese
environment together made it easier to slip into Chinese outside of the language pledge area.
Whereas it sometimes feels awkward to speak a mutual second language with people who also share
your first language, because we had the pledge, it was actually kind of natural.

FSO -

Roddy, in my program (basically CET, but all one-on-one instruction) we observe a language pledge
to speak only Chinese during the school day (i.e. from 0800 until 1500). That includes lunch and
breaks, so we students (all gringos) spend a considerable amount of time speaking to one another
in the target language. We are all fairly advanced students, so I agree with Xianu's point about
things probably being a bit more difficult for new beginners. The language pledge has been
particularly helpful in improving my casual speech - something I was sorely needing when I began
the program.

I think common sense is the key to observing language pledges. My colleagues and I go home to our
families every night, so we don't speak Chinese there. Also, when dealing with non-chinese
foreigners, we use whatever language is most appropriate. You don't want to cheat yourself or your
colleagues, but you also don't want to take the pledge to the point of absurdity. Anyway, that's
my view of it.

I just try to hang out with non-English speakers which is actually really hard when a lot of the
Chinese students are so eager to practice their English, and it seems apparent that they don't
want you to speak Chinese with them. With my English speaking friends, we usually speak English
but if there is a non-English speaker among us then we just stick to Chinese out of respect. It's
especially hard at times when you can tell the other person is so eager to speak English that
speaking Chinese might break their heart..haha

interesting topic, ive definitely tried a number of times before to have language pledges with my
english speaking friends and originally they all probably lasted only for two seconds.. we tended
to have long silences when the parties involved were trying to construct what they wanted to say
in their heads, and then out tumbled half english half chinese grammatically incorrect sentences
that were met with confused looks and head shakes. then because no one understood, it was an all
too natural reaction to switch to english to explain.

getting a lot better though.. the pledges are lasting up to days now

I recently spent a semester living on campus in Beijing, learning Mandarin. I had quite a few
Chinese friends, and we'd spend some time chatting in English and some in Mandarin. However, this
wasn't a formal arrangement.

When I was chatting with my flatmate and his friends, all Indonesian, at the beginning we'd try to
use Mandarin, but I soon discovered that most of their tones were wrong and I was scared that I'd
end up learning the wrong tones. From experience, once you've learnt the wrong tone it's very
(very) hard to relearn it. So from that discovery on, I decided to chat in English with other
foreigners unless they were totally accurate in their tones. Limited vocabulary was no problem,
but bad tones scared me

Was I right to have done what I did?

My first six months plus out here I was super strict in my own personal language pledge:
- no English, (only exceptions lost tourists asking for directions)
- no English tv channels or movies
- no mandarin dubbed movies (too unnatural and not enough background noise)
- limited English news reading
- no falling into traps, thus avoiding any type of English teaching/ tutoring, 'teach me English'
psuedo friendship scenario.
- If it wasn't Chinese it was silence. (This will make you pretty proactive to go find a local
Chinese to chat with otherwise risk insanity.)

Then after the first year in China, I had a Chinese network and could relaxed the pledge a bit.

I din't think a language pledge is important if you have the will to learn--you'll end up speaking
the language. Why force it upon yourself? If I were to do such a thing, though, I would break if
for the foreigners that look really lost (I have saved a few from serious confusion); that's just
a kind thing to do, I think. Usually everyone in Taiwan outside of Taipei naturally speak to me in
Chinese (in Taipei they always speak English first)... If they do, and it annoys you, you could
say, "bu hao yi si, ke yi gen wo shuo zhong wen ma? Wai guo ren you bu yi ding hui jiang ying
wen.." (and that way you don't have to lie about not being able to speak English, just give them a
hint) or something
anyway, that's my two cents

I've done it, and I think it worked very well. After getting my B.A. in Chinese, I spent a year
and a half at Beida and took a no-English-ever approach from the outset. When I arrived, I was
given a choice of roommates, so I picked a Japanese guy from Nara. He had studied English of
course, but he was too embarassed to use it, so we had no choice but to communicate in Chinese
only. I soon entered his circle of (Japanese) friends and with them as well, English was not an
option, either.

If I was on campus, I hung out with them, and if I was off campus, I hung out with Chinese
friends. I made friends with the employees and managers of the local internet cafe, and they were
all non-English speakers. Since most people figured I was a non-English speaker myself (rumor had
it I was German or something) the whole question of speaking English just never came up that much.

My Chinese got a lot better, faster, than my English-speaking classmates, and I also picked up a
fair amount of Japanese in the process, too. Also made friends with a lot of great people that
might not have otherwise.

Arg...maybe I'm just too nice but a majority of the people I meet on campus are ones who are eager
to learn English! Even when I speak mostly Chinese they will usually respond in English. Now those
of you who have this "pledge", how would you avoid this situation?
I actually sometimes prefer talking to the 服务员cause a) most don't know English and b)
they're not constantly talking about grades/school/finding a job..bla bla....
